Dr. Lichter currently serves as the company's president and CEO. Dr. Lichter, a biotechnology and pharmaceutical business executive, has over 20 years experience in management, scientific research and business development. Dr. Lichter has participated in licensing and M&A deals valued in excess of $1 billion. He is currently a managing director at Avalon Ventures and in that capacity is on the board of directors of Otonomy, Carolus, Zacharon, Incode and Akesis. He is an observer at Syndax board meetings. Until November 2008, Dr. Lichter served as president and CEO of Akesis Pharmaceuticals, a developer of patent protected diabetes drugs. He remains on the board of directors as executive chairman. In 2004, Dr. Lichter co-founded and served as vice president of operations at Sytera, Inc., a company that was acquired by Sirion Therapeutics, Inc. in July 2006.
Dr. Lichter has co-founded a number of other biotechnology companies, including Sequana Therapeutics, a genomics-base drug discovery company, and Xenopharm, a drug safety company. Dr. Lichter led negotiations in the development and management of collaborations with numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies across many therapeutic areas. In 2000, Dr. Lichter co-founded and was CEO of Xenopharm, a drug safety company, where he drove the development of the company and its ultimate acquisition by Deltagen. He served in management positions at Sequenom, Pfizer and Genset. Dr. Lichter held postdoctoral positions at DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. and Yale University. He received both his Ph.D. and B.S. at University of Illinois.

Prior to Afraxis, Dr. Campbell served as a member of the Phenomix Corporation executive team since 2003, most recently as an executive officer and senior vice president, discovery and development with responsibility for all drug discovery and development thru early clinical development to proof of concept in humans. Dr. Campbell was the senior vice president of chemical sciences at ActivX Biosciences from 2001 to 2003, where he directed the company's internal drug discovery programs as well as the development of ActivX's activity-based chemical probes. Dr. Campbell was director of discovery chemistry at Bayer Corporation where he directed the research efforts of the 41-scientist group discovering and optimizing drugs in the cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, and diabetes therapeutic areas. Dr. Campbell began his career at Affymax Research Institute, a combinatorial chemistry company that was creating novel technologies and strategies to facilitate the identification and optimization of compounds for the treatment of cancer and immune-mediated diseases.
Dr. Campbell holds three sole-authored and fifteen jointly authored patents, and has co-authored 30 original papers. He conducted post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley after receiving a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Cornell University and a B.S. in chemistry from Harvey Mudd College.

Mr. Stengone has more than 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, including positions in finance, strategic planning, business development, alliance management, market research and venture funding. Prior to joining Afraxis, he was with Phenomix Corporation from 2006 to 2010, where he was responsible for strategic collaborations and licensing agreements. He was also a member of the Phenomix executive management team as the senior director of business development. Mr. Stengone served as senior manager, business development and strategic marketing for Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from 2004 to 2006. Prior to that, Mr. Stengone held a variety of positions at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development.
Mr. Stengone received his MBA from Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He also holds a M.S. degree in organic chemistry from Duke University and a B.S. in chemistry from Wake Forest University.

Prior to joining the Afraxis team, Dr. Duron was a principal scientist in the medicinal chemistry group at Kalypsys, Inc. During his time at Kalypsys, he led and contributed to several projects spanning screening to IND in metabolic diseases, pain, inflammation and oncology. He was a key contributor in the identification of KD3010, a candidate that has been cleared to enter Phase II clinical trials.
Dr. Duron served as a post-doctoral fellow at The Scripps Research Institute after receiving his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Director of R&D Strategy
Prior to joining Afraxis, Dr. Rex was a Kauffman Foundation Fellow and research scientist at UC Irvine. There he studied the cellular and electrophysiological basis of learning and memory and published extensively in top neuroscience and cell biology journals. This work contributed significantly to our current understanding of how structural changes to dendritic spines mediate information processing in the brain.
Dr. Rex served as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Lynch at UC Irvine after completing his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the same institution.
